COVID-19 Information for Healthcare Providers

If you suspect your patient has been exposed to the COVID-19 virus, first go to the Indiana State Department of Health’s website for clinical and exposure criteria. Indiana State Department of Health Guidelines If your patient has met the clinical and exposure criteria per the ISDH, then do the following: Collect 1 specimen and order the following test: 39448(Quest) – SARS-CoV-2 RNA, QL Real-time RT-PCR

Specimen Requirements and Stability: 1 Nasopharyngeal Swab in a VCM. Ambient 72 hours.

Order COVID-19 separately from other tests – on a separate requisition and place each specimen with paperwork into its own sealed bag. Then place that bag into another sealed bag and identify it as COVID-19. Keep these specimens separate from all other specimens. Call MACL at 317-803-1010 for a regular courier pick up. Please do NOT request a STAT pick up. Allow a 4-7 day turnaround time. Please do not call MACL for results. Once testing has been performed, you will receive your results via your normal result transmission method.

Note: The COVID-19 test requires specimens be collected in appropriate healthcare settings. MACL Patient Service Centers and in-office phlebotomists will not collect these specimens. The test for COVID-19 aids in the presumptive detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA in the respiratory specimens of patients meeting CDC testing criteria. The test has not been FDA cleared or approved or authorized. The test has been validated according to CLIA, but FDA’s independent review of this validation is pending.
